We offer a variety of training opportunities for One-at-a-Time (OAAT) Counselling – sometimes called Single Session Therapy (SST)  –  throughout the year for all service providers and counsellors.

Introduction to One-at-a-Time (OAAT) Counselling/ Single Session Therapy

This training is for anyone who wants to learn and practice a One-at-a-Time (OAAT) Counselling approach to support people in the moment and in every conversation. Whether you are new to OAAT Counselling or want a refresher, our training is designed to meet your learning needs and enhance your skill set.

This course is regularly offered throughout the year, see upcoming workshop dates below to register.

Audience: Mental health service providers (registered or in-training) who offer individual, couples, or family counselling sessions. 

Course length: 12 hours over 3 or 4 days

Cost: $800

OAAT Supervision: Supporting clinicians through the supervisory process

This course will introduce participants to assumptions, knowledge, and practices of supervision that inspire effective One-at-a-Time (OAAT) Counselling relationships between supervisors, service providers and service users. 

This course is offered throughout the year, see upcoming workshop dates below to register.

Audience: Supervisors and managers of mental health and community service providers. 

Course length: 6 hours

One-at-a-Time (OAAT) Therapy Special Topics

These courses are designed to build on our foundational One-at-a-Time (OAAT) training and practice. Through real world examples, practice activities, and peer-to-peer learning, practitioners will deepen their OAAT therapy skills and feel confident in their ability to engage with all clients in meaningful ways.

Audience: Mental health service providers (registered or in-training) who offer individual, couples, or family counselling sessions.

Each OAAT Special Topics course centers on a critical topic and explores interventions and skillsets to mobilize existing strengths, resilience, and hope, regardless of who is attending the session:

  • Working with people managing trauma
  • Working with children, youth and families 
  • Working with people managing substance use and/or gambling concerns

Course length: 6 hours over 2 days

Meet Your Instructors

Learn from some of the most well-respected leaders in this field.

Dr. Monte Bobele, PhD, ABPP

A licensed psychologist and an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor, Monte consults with university counseling centers about implementing WI/SST services in a SC2.0 context for their student populations.

In 2011, he was awarded a Fulbright Specialist Grant to help develop a walk-in service in a university clinic in Mexico City; and has since consulted on the opening of two other walk-in clinics in Mexico. He has taught graduate courses in single-session therapy in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Australia, and has been deeply involved in developing programs designed to train culturally and linguistically competent psychologists to work with Spanish-speaking populations and has co-led several immersion programs in Mexico. Monte has also co-edited and published three books on therapy.

Alesya Courtnage, MA, RP

A Registered Psychotherapist and Certified Canadian Counsellor, Alesya has a passion for increasing hope through therapy. She received a Master of Arts degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, in 2001 and has been practicing as a psychotherapist in different mental health settings ever since. She is currently completing a PhD in Social Work at Wilfred Laurier University.

She has facilitated training in One-at-a-Time/ Single Session Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy for well-respected mental health agencies and organizations such as Kids Help Phone Line, Safeguards Training for Children and Youth, and The University of Toronto. 

Sharing her knowledge about One-at-a-Time/ Single Session Therapy and hope is a passion. Alesya has the ability to offer a range of workshops and training suitable for beginner to advanced mental health clinicians.

Dr. Arnie Slive

A licensed psychologist and AAMFT clinical fellow and approved supervisor, Arnie’s career interest is in developing strategies to make mental health increasingly accessible. While in Calgary, he was a founder of the Eastside Family Centre, a walk-in single-session counseling center, and was Clinical Director of Wood’s Homes. He is a past president of the Alberta Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and was a Fulbright Specialist teaching walk-in/single session services in Canada.

Arnie is also the co-editor of two books; When One Hour Is All You Have: Effective Counseling for Walk-in Clients and One At A Time: Single-Session Therapy By Walk-In Or Appointment.
