Facing long wait times and a decline in students served, the University of Northern Iowa set out to build a more responsive, inclusive mental health system for its 9,000 students. With SCS’s training, consultation, and collaboration, the campus implemented the Stepped Care 2.0® model and integrated One-at-a-Time (OAAT) counselling as a central access point for care.
Impact at a Glance
- First year in nearly 10 years with zero student hospitalizations for mental health crises
- Increased early interventions and reduced crisis situations
- A more responsive, inclusive, and accessible continuum of care for all students
“This past year marks a remarkable milestone for our campus: for the first time in nearly a decade, we did not have to send a single student to the hospital for a mental health crisis. While this outcome may be influenced by various factors, including the easing of post-COVID stressors, I truly believe that the implementation of Stepped Care 2.0 has played a significant role.” – Jennifer Jass, Director, Psychiatric and Counseling Services, University of Northern Iowa
